Shifts include the following days and times:
Sunday (Soquel) from 9:30 AM- 6:00 PM
Monday (Soquel) from 3 PM- 8:00PM
Tuesday (Soquel) from 3 PM- 8:00PM
Wednesday (Soquel) 3 PM- 8:00PM
5-7 administrative hours per week in Aptos; hours negotiable, Wednesday mornings mandatory in Aptos
*Position*
The *Chef/Kitchen Manager* is responsible for the smooth running of the Teen Kitchen Project kitchen, and the preparation of beautiful, delicious, and nourishing organic meals for Teen Kitchen Project's clients in a safe, professional and loving way.
As *Chef/Kitchen* *Manager*, this person oversees all aspects of Teen Kitchen Project’s Program at the Soquel site, and will have additional oversight at our Aptos kitchen and storage area.
This includes creating a culture that empowers youth ownership and leadership; working with Adult Mentors and Youth Leaders to maximize the opportunity for youth to gain skills, develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and discover their own strengths and capacities; and ensuring the quality of meals being prepared.
As*Chef/Kitchen Manager* at the Soquel program site, this person supervises all other Soquel site staff when the Executive Chef is on vacation or unavailable.
He/she provides coordination and cohesion in order to maximize the benefits to the youth being served and the efficiency of our efforts.
At the Aptos site, this person will oversee inventory, supplies, cleanliness, packaging and laundry.
The Aptos location is also available for administrative hours.
*Responsibilities* Assist in preparing the weekly cooking plan and leading all shifts in the kitchen to: ● Provide consistency in food safety and sanitation practices, and in cooking practices and food quality; ● Facilitate coordination from one day to the next; ● Ensure that all meals leaving the kitchen are beautiful, delicious and nutritious; and ● Support a culture of youth ownership and leadership ● Recruit, onboard, supervise and train teen chefs ● Scale and prepare weekly recipes, create shopping lists and manage procurement.
Must be available as back-up for ordering and receiving when the Executive Chef is not.
● Oversee Youth Development program including: ○ Assist in hiring and training new teens ○ Develop relationships with each youth and provide appropriate support, training and acknowledgement ○ Assist in developing the Youth Education Program integrating client visits, education and team building.
○ Identify, develop and work with Youth Leaders ○ Ensure that youth volunteers' needs and perspectives are considered in all aspects of Teen Kitchen Project’s work.
● Manage kitchen schedules in coordination with the Director of Operations and Executive Chef ● Maintain all kitchen equipment.
● Work with the Executive Chef to ensure compliance with all health and safety procedures.
● Coordinate weekly cleaning and monthly deep cleaning of the Soquel kitchen and as needed for the Aptos kitchen.
● Weekly laundering of towels and aprons in Aptos ● Packaging inventory and accuracy in coordination with the Aptos Office ● Back-up to Executive Chef as needed *Qualifications* Specific skills and training needed: ● A commitment to Teen Kitchen Project’s Mission and Operating Principles ● At least 3 years of professional cooking experience, preferably in the whole foods arena ● At least 3 years of experience directly managing other staff and/or teams ● Strong capacity for mentoring and teaching ● Experience in youth development ● Excellent organizational and management skills ● Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written ● Ability to stay calm and keep your sense of humor in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment ● Preference for community organizing experience, especially with youth ● Familiarity with recipe scaling databases.
● Culinary degree and/or B.
A required.
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive ● Willingness to learn new software programs as needed ● Ability to work well in a team.
● Preference given to applicants who are bilingual.
● Has a good awareness of self.
● Ability and desire to be in a work environment that values working as a team, relationships and giving and receiving honest feedback.
● Ability to communicate warmly and clearly *Physical requirements:* ● Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist and turn.
● Ability to use a computer keyboard and calculator.
● Ability to lift 25 pounds.
● Work environment is primarily indoors with the majority of time spent in a busy production kitchen or sitting at a desk.
